RMIT Bldg 88: Upholstered Joinery

A Unique and Flexible Workspace Design

To incorporate the client's requirements for both open and private office spaces, shared conference and meeting rooms with the flexibility to expand at a later date.

Designed by Peter Rattle of CUS (Vic) Pty Ltd, the RMIT Bldg 88 project stands out with its innovative use of upholstered joinery. The design concept draws on a continuous open area that wraps around the building core, providing a unique but standardized work environment. By limiting the amount of built-in joinery to specialized banquette seating and componentry, communal benches, and loose furniture, the space has been designed not only for its current occupants but also with future expansion in mind.

The 1650m2 fitout features collaborative and flexible working spaces, meeting rooms, executive meeting spaces, and large timber ceiling panels. One of the standout features is the curved and angular banquette seating, which helps to break up the main areas while maximizing the natural light from the fully glazed facades. The curved panel walls were individually manufactured on a CNC machine to achieve the desired shape, tapering from 1.0mt up to 2.0mts in height.

The design challenges for this project were overcome by ensuring the internal and external angled seating structure was fit for purpose without compromising on strength, stability, and the required shape. The result is a visually stunning and functional workspace that seamlessly blends in with the overall design elements of the building.

The RMIT Bldg 88 project was completed within a fast-tracked program, working two shifts over a 7-week period. The design team, led by Peter Rattle, conducted extensive research to ensure the banquette seating and joinery items integrated seamlessly with the angled colored floor tiles, timber ceiling struts, and overall finishes of the space.

This exceptional design has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The RMIT Bldg 88 project stands as a testament to the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its occupants and contributing to a better world.
